I’ve never seen a psychologist and I’m used to handling things on my own. Tell me a little more about therapy.

First of all, kudos for exploring options to improve your current life circumstances and/or well being. People who ask for professional help are usually ready to prioritize their mental health. In therapy, your psychologist (and/or other clients, if you’re in a group) will help you identify your strengths and implement them to problem-solve some of the difficulties that you may currently be having. Take advantage of the free 15 minute consultation that we offer and ask us any additional questions that you may have before starting therapy with us.

You offer group therapy but thinking about joining a group makes me nervous. Tell me more about group therapy, in general.

Group therapy is just as effective and sometimes even more effective than individual therapy –and it’s more affordable, too. Groups are a two-way street, in a way, because sometimes you will receive support and learn something from others and sometimes, unknowingly, you will be helping and supporting others. It’s normal to feel nervous; after all, you will be joining a group of strangers! But, it is the psychologist’s job to introduce everyone during the first session and help you feel comfortable in the group. You will likely be surprised by the end of the first group session when you realize that you are looking forward to the next group session.

I don’t understand why my medical doctor recommended therapy. Can’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective and some people really benefit from it. However, it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes, coupling medication with psychotherapy is the most effective course of action. Therapy can help you focus on the difficulties that you are experiencing, see new perspectives or alternative solutions to your current circumstances, and motivate you to try out new things to reach your preferred future.

How many sessions should I expect?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique, so how long you’ll be in therapy will depend on several factors. If you engage in Individual Therapy, some clients choose to attend -and benefit- from a few sessions (3 to 6), thus preferring short-term therapy. Some clients want to engage in long-term therapy (7+ sessions). You and your psychologist can decide, on an ongoing basis, how many sessions seem appropriate depending on your needs.

In group therapy, there are usually a predetermined number of sessions. The start date, end date, and time at which group will be held are also pre-established.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What should I do?

The best way to benefit from psychotherapy is to be willing to put in the work. That means attending your scheduled sessions, actively participating in the process by being honest with yourself and with the psychologist, giving yourself permission to be vulnerable, and recognizing that although there may be some discomfort in the process, it’s exactly that -part of the process- and the road towards personal growth.

    What’s your cancellation policy?

If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure to call us at least 24 hours beforehand. Otherwise, you may be charged for the full rate of the session.
